february is the cruellest month

T.S. Eliot had it wrong. Perhaps he wasn’t a runner. You can say February is the shortest month, but it truly is the longest month of the year, especially for those of us wanting to run outside.

I can only be thankful for the long-ago gift of a friend, a free treadmill. At the time, I had no idea how valuable this gift would be. I’ve run many training miles on the treadmill during cold Pennsylvania winters filled with snow and ice.

This morning, we woke to a light sprinkling of snow, combined with rain. Of course, in Virginia, this meant a 2-hour delay for school students. In Pennsylvania, life would have gone on. Though, I will say that the winding country roads in Virginia are no joke when everyone flies down them 10 miles over the speed limit. My kids have told me several times their bus drivers have had to take evasive maneuvers due to tractor-trailers going too fast on the curves.

I’m not a big fan of doing longer runs on the treadmill. Due to several factors, I needed to run 4 miles today. I thought I had to go out in the morning for a faith study at our church so I planned accordingly. I did 2 miles on the treadmill while watching Netflix on my iPad, and then showered and discovered my faith study was canceled. I hopped back on the treadmill a few hours later for Netflix and running. It’s the new thing.

Next week is looking really good for trail running with highs in the low 60’s with almost no rain.
