I’m struggling with gardening here in Virginia. The previous owner of our home did little to improve the red clay soil. While the soil has nutrients, they are not easily accessible for new plants. Unfortunately, we don’t have the same access to free leaf mulch we had in Pennsylvania to help the soil.

After trying to garden in beds and pots this summer with partial success, I decided to make a garden in pots on our back porch. Despite the trees, it receives a fair amount of sun. It’s also next to the house for easy access and inaccessible for my nemesis, the deer.
I have the following in pots:
Lettuce
Mustard seed
Snap peas
Kale
Basil and cherry tomato
The kale are being eaten by bugs, though everything else is doing okay.

This morning I picked a nice little haul for salads at dinner tonight. I’m hopeful I can keep picking greens once or twice a week.
