bare root trees and edible landscaping

This week, I took a trip north of us to pick up my tree order at the Virginia Department of Forestry Augusta nursery. I had elected to pick up my tree order this time rather than pay $25 to ship a $30 order. My tentative plan was to stop at Costco in nearby Charlottesville to check out the rose offerings.

The 1 1/2-hour drive north was interesting, especially once I got off Route 29. The road was lined with vineyards and whiskey places. Then, I drove by part of the Blue Ridge Parkway and could look down into the valley while driving.

After I got home, I wrapped up my bare-root dogwood trees and put them in the fridge. Then, I walked around the yard placing markers for the trees and the other plants I had picked up. The day before planting, I will put the trees in water to prepare them.

So, I didn’t go to Costco after all. While I was at the Augusta nursery, I did a quick search for nearby nurseries and found Edible Landscaping. Fortunately, it was on my way home, though I would have driven a bit out of the way quite happily. If you’re in the Afton area, I highly recommend making the trip to Edible Landscaping. I had a wonderful time wandering around the nursery and the employee who helped me was wonderful.

My plant purchases for the day:

  • Dogwood Osier
  • Dogwood Gray
  • Viking Aronia
  • Climax Blueberry
  • Crandall Currant
  • Garlic Chives
  • Adams Elderberry
  • Bob Gordon Elderberry
  • Isabella Elderberry
  • Villard Blanc Grape
