spring garden task: homemade compost

Today, we worked on our compost piles, moving them along for the warmer weather. A few years ago, we set up a 3 bin system with cinder blocks in the back of the property. I think the total cost was about $300 to $400. As an aside, my husband will fix the left bin that is blowing out the side.

A long, long time ago, we purchased a shredder. If you have the funds to buy one, I would recommend it. We have definitely gotten our money’s worth over the years. This one uses gasoline.

We started with the bin furthest on the right, and the oldest pile. After shredding, it looked almost like soil. I spread it around the shrubs in the bed in front of the garage. While I would love to cover the bed, I don’t have enough compost to do that, and I have many more shrubs to mulch.

We also had dry leaves to shred. My husband finds it more efficient to spread the leaves on the lawn, chop them with the tractor and scoop them up afterwards. These leaves are the foundation for a new pile. To speed up decomposition, I added alfalfa pellets in several layers to the pile.

Time to collect more leaves to shred!
