direct sowing: snap peas

Thanks to warmer temperatures this week, I’ve been preparing the outdoor beds for spring. Though a week behind, I planted many snap peas and a few sweet peas. I need to pick up more sweet pea seeds this weekend. Anyhoo, I’m still getting accustomed to planting snap peas in mid-February instead of mid-March like I did in Pennsylvania.

This year, I used snap peas I bought last year. Snowbird snap peas do not require support and need about 58 days to produce. I put them in larger pots on our front porch. Since the front porch faces the sun most of the day and warms up sooner than the ground, it’s a good micro-climate for late winter sowing. I can also keep the plants out of the reach of the deer.

On the back porch, I used Tom Thumb peas. While I was not super impressed by the yield last year, I decided to give these another try. Then, in our vegetable garden, I used regular snap peas in the metal raised bed where I could provide support if needed.
