One of my savings strategies this year is to maximize the savings when we spend money. I already do this through various programs like Ibotta and Rakuten. I also make use of coupons. And I like to maximize the cash back from my credit cards.
In January, I signed up for Citibank’s cash card. The cash card gives you 5% back on your highest spending category when you spend $500 in that category. If you spend $1200 over the first six months, you get $200 back.
I only use the Citibank cash card for grocery spending. I pay it off each week after I go grocery shopping.
Last Friday I went to CVS to buy some items for my son. I had two coupons from CVS, one for $5 off $20 and one for $1 off my next purchase.
I ended up splitting my shopping into two purchases. I used my two coupons for my first purchase plus my extra care card rewards. And I had a nice surprise. When I put my Citibank cash card into the machine to pay, I was asked if I wanted to use my $10 in rewards from the card. Who wouldn’t? That took $10 off my purchase making it $8.47.
For my second purchase, I use my HSA since the items qualified and received $10 extra care bucks back.
