frugal friday 10.11.24

I’m back! My schedule got a little crazy, and then we did a 24-hour visit to see our 2 sons in Pennsylvania.

  1. October Unprocessed – I set a goal of making stuff from scratch AND using up old ingredients. One item I’m using up is chia seeds purchased from Giant way back when. I toss them in our morning smoothies.
  2. Transplants in the Vegetable Garden – In July, I started a bunch of cold weather crops – broccoli, kale, cabbage, and broccoli rabe – from seed and grew them in our basement greenhouse. Over the past 2 weeks, I moved these plants into our vegetable garden while cleaning up the summer plants in the garden. I’ve picked kale and arugula (already in the garden) a few times for our morning smoothies. Unfortunately, a bug has eaten the broccoli, though with the temps cooling down, this bug may decide to go away. Somewhere else. The broccoli are pushing new growth; I’m not giving up.
  3. I love my price book – which I do need to update. However, it has been super handy. Last weekend, we stopped at Costco on the way home from PA. We’ve been able to combine Costco trips with PA trips, saving us from driving 3 hours just for Costco. While at Costco last weekend, I did a quick check to see if the price of whey protein was good; it was. Today, I thought I had found a good deal on laundry detergent at CVS until I realized that it was not so good thanks to my price book.
  4. Plant stand at Goodwill – This week, I brought my geraniums and amaryllis plants inside and discovered I needed some plants to put everything. My daughter and I stopped by Goodwill on the way to Aldi and found an Ikea side table, normally $25, for $6. Woohoo! This is the second time I’ve found a good deal on plant stands at Goodwill.
  5. Perennial transplants in the ground – When I started the cold weather crops in July, I started echinacea and hyssop. I put them in the ground this week. Hopefully, they survive the fall and come back next spring.
