practical knitting projects

After a break, maybe 7 or 8 years, I decided to pick up knitting again. I love knitting and embroidery. When the kids were little, I took a few of their drawings and turned them into embroidered pillows. I also knitted many socks, hats, a sweater, a few scarves, and a few blankets.

My love of knitting came from my English grandmother. When I was growing up, she knitted us sweaters every year. I loved each and every one of them. At one point, maybe high school, she taught me how to knit. After she died, my aunt gave me her knitting needles, a stash of knitting magazines, and some projects my grandmother never finished.

When we moved 3 years ago, my knitting projects, supplies, and books were packed haphazardly. I had a big sweater project I had just started along with a pair of socks for my husband, a finished hat, and a scarf. Spending some time with my niece and sister-in-law in July and watching them knit and crochet inspired me to pull everything together and address my projects.

I have plenty of yarn to keep me going, though I’m going to clean out the colors that no longer appeal. I need to find a case to hold my needles in. I have 2 bags that I use for holding current projects.

What to Knit

Since my kids have outgrown the easy fun projects like mittens and scarves, and I have no grandchildren yet, I decided to make a list of practical projects for my yarn stash.

  • coffee cozie
  • scarves
  • pillows
  • socks for my husband
  • plastic bag holder
  • washcloths
  • baby blankets for our church
  • sleeveless tops

Now to finish that one sock.
