updating plastic adirondack chairs

I’ve been doing a monthly budget challenge since the beginning of June. We had received a ginormous electric bill that I wanted to reduce for the following month. I also wanted to reduce our spending, especially on groceries. The good news is I kept the electric bill the same for July, and only a $100 increase for August. The grocery bill is taking longer to decrease; that’s a whole post in itself.

My budget challenge has inspired me to focus on “reducing, reusing, and recycling.” I’ll be sharing what I’m working on, starting with updating my plastic outdoor chairs instead of buying new.

Last week, I ran across a post about renovating tired looking outdoor furniture. I’m going to use the tips to update our aluminum patio furniture. But first, I decided to tackle updating our plastic Adirondack chairs with the help of this post.

First step was cleaning the chairs. Since my daughter had already washed them with soap, I just rinsed the new dirt off and let them dry in the sun.

I bought Rust-oleum paint for $6.48 per can at Home Depot. Even though the post specified one can per chair, I bought 3 just in case. I also wanted to have a can on hand for touch-ups. I ended up using almost 2 cans per chair.

I set up the chairs for spraying on a plastic shower curtain from The Dollar Tree. I had bought them for my winter sowing project at $1.25 each.

Voila – the final product! Updating the chairs cost me $12.96 per chair, much better than buying new chairs at $30 each.
