amaryllis experiment

Recently I decided to try growing my own amaryllis from seed. Thanks to advice from a friend, I pollinated the amaryllis I bought at Home Depot after Christmas for half price. Then I waited and watched.

I saw these bulbs begin to swell on 4 plants. If the bulbs continued to increase in size beyond a few weeks, I would potentially have created the seeds. 3 plants were successful, and one was not.

I waited for the bulbs to completely dry and begin to open. Inside were these brown/black papery thin seeds.

I wasn’t sure what to do with them. When I checked with my friend who gave me advice on pollinating, she told me to try floating the seeds and shared the video above.

This is my setup for floating seeds. I recycled a lettuce container that has a peel-off lid. I’m keeping these in my indoor greenhouse which is around 70 degrees with the lights. Once these sprout, I’ll set them up, probably in the breakfast room. I have a feeling I’m going to need grow lights to encourage the amaryllis to grow. According to my research, it takes about 4 to 5 years for the amaryllis to grow large enough to flower.
