This is a catch-up post from my fall gardening tour. When I share the current state of the yard, it will be interesting to see what worked last year, what’s remaining in place, and how I plan to change some stuff.

Every year, I think I’m prepared for the beginning of school and every year, I’m shown how ludicrous that thought is. Anyway, this is the area behind the lower level of our home. It receives a fair amount of sun during the day thanks to the lack of direct tree cover, however, I would not label it full sun. The sun is not as intense here as it is along the edge of our property.
This area started out with the shrub in the middle, the small rhododendron, the lavender mint, and a low-growing shrub. My husband removed the low-growing shrub which was not very interesting to look at. I plan on moving the lavender mint this fall to my new full sun bed at the corner of the property. While it’s not a terribly interesting plant, the flowers attract lots of bees and beneficial insects.

The first summer we were here I planted the phlox, and Stella D’Oro lilies. The lilies are taking a LONG time to mature and produce the golden yellow flowers my husband loves. This year, I added in cosmos, and a few annuals: nasturtium, four o’clock, basil, and cosmos.
We added a shrub rose, salvia, and bee balm. I have elephant ears planted all over the beds; these elephant ears are the biggest.

From this angle, you can see the other 2 perennials I installed last year. You can also see a bit of the iris I transplanted from our fountain adjacent to this bed. In the back by the window are Japanese holly which my husband cut back to 2 inches above the ground. One has started regrowing; the other hasn’t done anything yet.
