garden tour: side garden

Since it’s been way too long, I’m catching up on my garden from this past summer, and then I’ll move on to the changes we’ve made and plans for 2024.

This area on the side of the house receives a fair amount of sun during the day. It also has the richest soil of all the beds on the property.

The grasses in the back of the bed hide our HVAC equipment during the warm months. However, I think they need to be moved back a bit. I’d like to balance the bed a bit; you’ll see what I mean in the next picture. In front of the grass are salvia plants. I’ve been rooting pieces in other beds in hopes of spreading the plants. I think 2 have taken root.

As you can see in this picture, the bed has a more open section flanked by the grasses and evergreens. I trimmed the shrubs in the back this past summer. However, I think I may take them down another foot in the early spring.

This area is supposed to be a shade garden after removing a pine tree. We removed a River Birch near by which has allowed more sun in this spot. I’m monitoring this area next year to see if I need to move the plants.
