One of my fitness goals for 2023 is to repeat the trail half marathon race I did last spring. I have no expectation of improving my time. I’ll be happy to simply train well and finish well. But, I chose the race to give myself something to work towards.

My plan was to start the training using Hal Higdon’s Novice plan at the beginning of February. However, when January 1st hit, I decided I would start earlier, i.e. January 1st. For the first month of training, I’m going to do each week twice. Because I haven’t run consistently during the fall due to my knee injury and ear infection, I wanted to start slowly and build my base while following a strength training program.
As I near the end of the first week of this revised plan, I’m glad I decided to start earlier. I love trail running, and this gives me a reason to get on the trails once or twice a week. I can feel my body getting stronger, and I can feel my daily dedication to my physical therapy exercises paying off in less soreness in my knee and hips. I’m also struggling less with my food choices and hitting my protein and carb goals almost every day.
